What are shingles and are they contagious?
Nearly 1 million cases of shingles are estimated each year in the US. Anyone who has recovered from chickenpox can develop shingles, this includes children. However, shingles are most common in people 50 years old and older. Shingles refer to a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Even after a patient recovers from chickenpox, the virus can linger in the body and, years later, cause shingles to appear.
What is pink eye?
Conjunctivitis – or pink eye – is common in adults and children causing itchy, pink eyes. The patient will develop symptoms, such as inflammation of the white of the eye and inner eyelid, making the eye appear pink or red. Even though pink eye causes discomfort, it’s fairly common and very easy to treat. However, it’s highly contagious so patients are advised to seek out care as soon as they notice symptoms of pink eye, to prevent spreading it at home, work or even at school.
What is bronchitis?
Bronchitis causes inflammation of the main air passages, called the bronchi, to your lungs. The symptoms can include coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. The coughing often brings up yellow or greenish mucus. There are two main types of bronchitis, acute and chronic. Acute usually starts with a sore throat and is often caused by a cold virus. It can also cause a lingering, dry cough. Chronic bronchitis, a type of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), happens when a patient’s bronchi are inflamed and produce mucus, making it feel difficult to breathe.
